Buying a basketball hoop

Basketball Hoop

Is it your ambition to play for one of the leading teams in the NBA? Do you dream of becoming a professional basketball player? Then bringing your basketball skills to a higher level is essential and having a basketball hoop will certainly contribute to improving your shots.

However, basketball hoops are available in various forms and shapes and in various price categories. So what do you need to look at when buying a basketball hoop?

First of all, it is important to decide where you want to hang the hoop. Are you planning to mount it to a wall? Are you looking for a portable basketball hoop? Or are you planning to secure it over your garage door?  How much space do you have? And what kind of playing style do you and your friends have?

Types of basketball hoops

Below you will find tips and advice for buying a basketball hoop:

There are three kinds of basketball hoops: a portable basketball system, an in-ground pole and a combination system.

Portable Basketball Hoop

A portable basketball hoop has a stand-alone unit with a pole, which is adjustable in height, backboard and rim in one basketball system. The unit has wheels, so you can easily move it around or take it with you. It is however important to fill the base with sand or water for stability. These portable systems are less suited for players with an aggressive style of playing.

In-ground Basketball Systems

The in-ground basketball systems are permanent and require cement installation. These basketball hoops are more stable and therefore a better option for aggressive basketball players.

Combination Basketball Systems

A combination system is a basketball hoop that you mount to a wall, door or other places. This kind of basketball systems are also permanent and offer a good stability.

Basketball Backboards

Backboards are available in various sizes, shapes and are made of a wide variety of materials. For young kids, a 44” board should be big enough, while teenagers will prefer a backboard of anywhere between 48” and 72”.

Most basketball backboards are fan shaped or rectangular. The latter option offers more room to shoot, but is also more expensive than the fan-shaped backboard.

Graphite or polyethylene backboards are a good option for young children, while beginners should look for acrylic boards and more advanced basketball players for glass backboards.

Basketball Nets

Although nylon nets wear out much faster than chain-link nets, these all-weather nylon nets are in general a better option, since the chain-link nets could rust in wet weather conditions.

Basketball Rims

Basketball rims should be 18” in diameter and spring-loaded, so it can handle the impact of slam dunks and pressure from the players.

Basketball Hoops Prices

Basketball hoops are available in a wide variety of styles, materials and prices, so it should not be difficult to find a system in a sport- or online shop that fits your personal needs.
